THE PROBLEM

A better-looking website will not fix an unclear business

Many businesses begin a website project by talking about colours, layouts and pages.

Those things matter. But they cannot decide what your customers need to understand first, what proof they need to see or why they should choose you instead of someone else.

If the message is unclear, a new design may only make the confusion look more polished.

You may recognise the problem:

  • the business has changed, but the website still represents an earlier version of it;

  • the website lists services without making the differences clear;

  • the business is good at what it does, but the value is difficult to explain;

  • the site contains plenty of information, but visitors still ask basic questions;

  • the right customers cannot quickly see that the business is suitable for them; or

  • you are unsure whether you need a new website, better content or a clearer offer.

A website project should begin with the communication problem, not with a template or a list of pages.

WHAT I DO

I build the website around the customer’s decision

Before deciding how the website should look, I work out what it needs to help people understand.That means looking at:

  • what you offer and who it is for;

  • what your customers are trying to decide;

  • where they are likely to hesitate;

  • what questions they need answered;

  • which parts of your experience need to be made more visible; and

  • what the next step should feel like.

The website is then shaped around those decisions.

This might mean clarifying the offer, changing the page structure, rewriting important content, bringing proof forward or removing information that is getting in the way.

Only then do we use design and development to turn that direction into a working website.

WHAT THE PROJECT CAN INCLUDE

A complete website project, from direction to launch

The exact scope depends on what your business needs, but a project can include:

Customer and offer review

A clear look at what you offer, who you want to attract and what a potential customer needs to understand before getting in touch.

Website structure and content direction

A page structure built around customer questions and business priorities, rather than adding pages simply to make the website bigger.

Website copywriting or copy refinement

Clear, plain-English copy that explains the service, answers important concerns and makes the value easier to understand.

Visual direction and responsive design

A visual system that supports the message, makes the business feel credible and works across desktop and mobile.

Website build

A responsive website built in Framer or Webflow, depending on the project and the way you need to manage it afterwards.

On-page SEO foundation

Relevant page titles, headings, descriptions and page content that give the website a sensible starting point in search.

Launch and handover support

Support with the final checks, launch and handover so you know how the website works and what to do next.

WHY THE THINKING COMES FIRST

The website is not the strategy. It is where the strategy becomes visible.

A website can be beautifully designed and still fail to explain the business.

It can have all the required pages and still leave a visitor unsure what to do.It can even rank for relevant searches and still fail to create enquiries if the page does not answer the customer’s concerns.

That is why I do not begin with a fixed template and force every business into the same structure.I first work out:

  • what the customer needs to recognise;

  • what they need to understand;

  • what they need to believe; and

  • what they need to feel ready to do next.

Then the copy, design and build support that journey.

TEMPLATES & BESPOKE DESIGN

A template can save production time. It cannot do the thinking.

I am not against templates.

A good template can reduce production cost, provide a useful starting point and help a business get live sooner.

But the template cannot decide:
•what your customer needs to understand;
•which service should receive the most attention;
•what questions are stopping people from moving forward; or
•which proof will make your expertise believable.

The same template can produce a very different result depending on the thinking, content and proof placed inside it.

The important question is not simply:
“Is this website bespoke?”
It is:
“Does this website make the right business easier to understand and choose?”

WHAT CHANGES AFTER THE PROJECT

A website that gives your expertise somewhere useful to go

The aim is not to make your business sound like every other professional service.

It is to make the value of your particular business easier to see.

After the project, you should have:

  • a clearer explanation of what you offer;

  • a website structure that reflects how customers make decisions;

  • service pages with a clear purpose;

  • stronger proof in the places where people need reassurance;

  • a clearer route from finding you to contacting you; and

  • a website that gives future content, case studies and marketing somewhere useful to lead people.

The website cannot control every decision a customer makes.

But it can stop making the decision harder than it needs to be.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

For specialist and professional-services businesses

This work is especially useful when your service is:

  • technical or difficult to explain;

  • high-consideration or expensive;

  • built around specialist knowledge;

  • difficult for customers to compare fairly; or

  • changing faster than your website can keep up.

It may be a good fit for practices, consultancies, studios, clinics, technical businesses, charities and other professional-services businesses that need their expertise to be easier to follow without flattening it into generic marketing language.

This may not be the right project if you only need a visual refresh

If your offer, content and website structure are already clear, you may only need a designer or developer to improve the visual presentation.

That is not the work I am best positioned to lead.My role is most useful when the website needs clearer thinking as well as better design.

HOW THE PROJECT WORKS

From unclear direction to a website ready to launch

1. Understand the business

We look at your services, customers, experience, goals and what the current website is failing to communicate.

2. Find the communication problem

We identify whether the main issue is the offer, message, structure, proof, design, customer journey or a combination of these.

3. Set the website direction

We decide what the website needs to say, which pages are needed and what each page should help the customer understand or do.

4. Create the copy and visual direction

I develop the page content, message order and visual direction so the website feels clear, credible and recognisably yours.

5. Build the website

The approved direction is turned into a responsive website in Framer or Webflow.

6. Review, refine and launch

You review the website, we make the agreed refinements, then I support the final checks and launch.

7. Decide what should happen next

Once the website is live, we can identify useful next steps such as case studies, articles, video content or additional service pages.

Professional services website design questions

Do you provide the website copy as well as the design?

Yes. The project can include website copywriting, copy refinement and content direction. This means the design is built around a clear message rather than asking a layout to carry unclear content.

Do you build the website yourself?

Yes. I can build the website remotely in Framer or Webflow, depending on the project and your preferred way of managing it afterwards.

Can you work with our existing branding?

Yes. I can work with an existing identity when it is suitable for the business. If the brand is creating a communication problem, I will explain what I think needs attention rather than automatically recommending a full rebrand.

Do we need a completely bespoke website?

Not necessarily. A template can be a sensible way to reduce production cost and get the website live. What matters is whether the content, structure and proof are right for your business and your customers.

Will the website rank on Google?

No website designer can responsibly guarantee rankings. I can build a sensible on-page SEO foundation and use relevant search research where appropriate, but search performance also depends on competition, authority, content, location and time.

Can you redesign an existing website rather than start again?

Yes. In some cases, improving the existing structure, messaging and priority pages is more useful than replacing the whole website. The right route depends on what is getting in the way.

What if I am not sure what pages we need?

That is part of the work. I will help decide which pages are necessary based on what customers need to understand and what the business needs the website to do.

Do not build a bigger website just to have a bigger website

Build the website that helps the right people understand your value, trust your expertise and take the next step.
